Building a token-driven social network

How Darize supported DEGEN in scaling a Web3 community into a production-ready, token-driven social platform.

The Challenge

Scaling a Web3 community

DEGEN emerged as a grassroots token experiment within Farcaster that rapidly evolved into a fast-growing Web3 community with expanding ambitions. Scaling it meant a production-ready backend built for rapid user growth, token-based reward mechanisms tied to social engagement, and stable deployments despite constant experimentation — all while building senior engineering capacity to shape the architecture for the long term.

Rapid user growth

A production-ready backend capable of supporting rapid user growth.

Token-based rewards

Reward mechanisms tightly integrated with social engagement.

Stable deployments

Stable deployments despite constant experimentation and fast iteration.

Senior engineering

Senior engineering capacity able to deliver independently while shaping long-term architecture.

Technical Foundation

A greenfield technical foundation

Built from the very first line of code.

Operating in a true greenfield environment, the team was responsible for shaping the platform’s technical foundation from the very first line of code. There was no legacy system to migrate, no existing conventions to inherit, and no established playbook for the kind of product DEGEN was becoming — a token-driven social network built on top of the open Farcaster protocol, where community behaviour and reward mechanics were evolving in real time.

Every architectural decision had to be made deliberately, with an eye on both immediate stability and long-term scale: how services would communicate as the user base grew unpredictably, how token-based rewards tied to social engagement could be processed without introducing bottlenecks or inconsistencies, and how a mobile application designed from scratch in Figma could ship fast without compromising on quality or performance.

The consultants worked in close collaboration with DEGEN’s own engineers, pairing on design decisions rather than working in isolation, so that architectural knowledge stayed embedded in the client’s team rather than locked inside a small group of external specialists.

Data modelling had to account for two very different access patterns at once — relational integrity for core platform data, and high-throughput, flexible storage for the social and engagement layer — which shaped the decision to run PostgreSQL and DynamoDB side by side rather than forcing a single database to do both jobs.

Infrastructure choices followed the same logic: build for elasticity from day one, so that sudden spikes in community activity — the kind a fast-growing Web3 project experiences almost by definition — would not require a rearchitecture under pressure. That responsibility spanned the full stack, including:

  • A distributed Node.js backend architecture
  • Scalable AWS infrastructure with ECS, Lambda, EC2, and CloudFront
  • PostgreSQL and DynamoDB for data storage
  • A React Native mobile client designed entirely in Figma
  • CI/CD pipelines optimised for rapid iteration and stability
  1. Discovery and architecture workshops to align on the technical foundation
  2. Core platform build — backend services, data layer, and CI/CD pipelines
  3. Mobile client development in parallel, from Figma design to production build
  4. Phased rollout with load testing ahead of major community growth spikes

Consultant Perspective

Deep ownership, accelerated growth

For Darize’s consultants, the impact was equally tangible. Working on a fully greenfield Web3 platform provided deep ownership and accelerated growth — the kind of hands-on responsibility that’s hard to come by on established systems with years of existing conventions to work within.

Rather than inheriting someone else’s architecture, they were making foundational decisions from day one, shaping how the platform communicated, scaled, and evolved alongside a fast-moving community — and translating that ambiguity into working software gave their technical and soft-skill growth a genuine head start:

“We aren’t just implementing templates – we invent new features and shape the direction of the product. It’s rare to have a project built 100% from the ground up, and it significantly accelerates both technical and soft-skill growth.”

— One Darize consultant on the project

In Summary

What began as a small community token has evolved into one of the most recognisable Web3 communities, powered by technology enabling genuine, creator-driven engagement.

By supplying experienced specialists capable of thriving in an evolving Web3 environment, Darize helped DEGEN transform a fast-growing community experiment into a scalable, long-term platform.

FAQ

Questions about this engagement

DEGEN had grown from a small token experiment into a fast-moving Web3 community, and needed a production-ready backend that could handle rapid growth without breaking every time the product changed direction.
